Canada Visa Categories

International Students apply for a study permit if they plan to attend a Canadian educational institution. Once issued, a study permit allows a foreign citizen to study in Canada for the duration of the specified course or program at an approved institute.

There are two types of Canadian Study permits:

  • SDS - Student Direct Stream
  • Non-SDS: Non-Student Direct Stream
What is SDS?

SDS- Student Direct Stream is technically known as Students Partner Program, which is an initiative by Canada Immigration Services. If students want to study in Canada, student visa applications are processed immediately and directly under the SDS system. On the other hand, your SDS application can only be submitted online. In addition, under the SDS category, students must complete specific conditions imposed by Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada.

What is Non-SDS?

The Non-SDS Category is a broad category used to apply for a study visa in Canada. Candidates who are unable to achieve the SDS requirements are given the opportunity to apply through this method. More papers may be required. Thus the requirements will be varied.

Documents Required for SDS Visa Application

  • For Undergraduate Course: Academics transcripts of High School - 12th with minimum 55% aggregate marks.
  • For Postgraduate Courses: Students must hold a graduate degree or advanced diploma with a minimum of 50% marks.
  • English Language Proficiency Test Score such as IELTS/ PTE with a minimum of 6 bands overall for UG course and 6.5 bands overall for PG course.
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Offer Letter from College/University under SDS Category.
  • Proof of GIC of $10,000, i.e. 7.4 Lacs, to secure living expenses in Canada.
  • Previous Work Experience for PG.
  • Receipt of Tuition Fee.
  • Medical Test
  • Visa Application Fee.
Documents Required for Non-SDS Visa Application
  • For Undergraduate Course: Academics transcripts of High School - 12th with minimum 55% aggregate marks.
  • For Postgraduate Courses: Students must hold a graduate degree or advanced diploma with a minimum of 50% marks.
  • English Language Proficiency Test Score such as IELTS/ PTE with a minimum of 6 bands overall for UG course and 6.5 bands overall for PG course.
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Offer Letter from College/University under non-SDS Category.
  • Proof of funds such as savings, student loans or investments.
  • Income tax returns of Canadian or sponsor
  • Previous Work Experience and payslip for PG.
  • Receipt of Tuition Fee.
  • Medical Test
  • Visa Application Fee.
SDS vs Non-SDS
  • Candidates in the SDS category do not need to submit as much documentation to demonstrate financial eligibility. The quantity of documentation in the Non-SDS method is higher.
  • In comparison to non-SDS, the SDS technique is streamlined and easy. It takes about 45 days to complete the process.
