CBIE launches action plan for International Education

For a year, Canada has been making it to the top of international news either through geopolitical tensions or the international education sector. In between, CBIE, the Canadian Bureau for International Education, has called for the creation of a premier and dedicated international education council in an attempt to reminisce Canada’s global band as a top study destination.

This action has been declared through a publication in the National Dialogue on International Students. The report recommends community integration, labour market integration, and accommodation needs of international students.

The report mentions an action plan that shows a new chapter in Canada’s international education sector after the Canadian government implemented study permit caps in January, followed by restrictions on PGWP Eligibility and Permanent Residency.

The report reflects the key outcomes of the National Dialogue on International Students. It outlines a vivid range of thematic recommendations for community integration, mental health and minute accommodation needs of international students studying in Canada. It also formulated an eight-point action plan for the international education sector.

A report elaborates on another important issue that has to do with the fact that the global brand of Canada, which ‘has been fundamentally hurt’ over the past eleven months, needs a national strategy for its restoration.

Our relationships with prospective students, as well as their parents and others interested in coming to Canada, are very important to us. Because of this, we would like to restore their confidence in Canada so that it can be viewed as a reliable and secure study destination" Bezo stated.

Media narratives historically and in the present have created a very supportive dispositional environment for immigrants in Canada, however, when such narratives begin to prevail, we find ourselves entering politics, and as a result, we start witnessing even more politicized actions taken rather than sensible policymaking,” she continued.

Bezo noted that the report emphasizes the significance of addressing the post-pandemic anti-immigrant rhetoric during economic, labour, and global political turmoil.

Last week’s figure was underscored by the comment from Ontario’s Premier Ford, who revealed the government’s intention to ban international medical students from the province next year due to accusations that they are “occupying” 18% of the places while, in fact, this figure stands at 0.26%.

Most recently, in the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan, the federal government indicated its intention to greatly reduce the targets for the Provincial Nominee Program, emphasizing their severe internal coherence deficit – perhaps the most significant barrier to the integration of the sector.

Primary issues of concern are in place among federal, provincial and territorial governments Bezo assessed and further commented that "the Canada brand is only as good as this knit."

With this amendment, the global trend of studying in Canada for international students remains hopeful, and students aiming to study in Canada see a ray of hope through this new action plan.
