Founded in 1890, The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is a public research University, in Tasmania, and Australia’s 4th oldest University.

UTAS is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the world’s international University network.  UTAS offers a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across a wide array of disciplines, in coordination with its links to over 20 specialised research institutions, and research centres.

The University has a 5 star rating ( well-cbove world standard), in research, as awarded by the Australian research council. A key cntributing factor to this rating is the University’s institute for Maritime and Antarctic studies.

UTAS additionally offers tertiary programs in education, training and research at the Australian Maritime College.

Each year, UTAS enroles over 38,000 students at its University, with 6,000 International students from over 100 different countries.

Campus Locations

  • Hobart Campus, Sandy Bay

    The UTAS Hobart campus is located in Sandy Bay, five minutes outside the Hobart city. The campus is situated in a beachside suburb, between Mount Wellington and Derwent River. It is only a short drive from the Hobart Airport and located in close proximity to shops, transport, accommodation and other entertainment facilities.

    Most of the UTAS faculties are based at the Sandy Bay Campus, with close links to the University’s satellite campuses, including the Conservatorium of music, the School of Creative Arts, and the Institute for Marine and Antarctic studies.

    The campus also includes the College of Health and Medicine and the Menzies Research Institute. In the coming years It also plans to include the Academy of Creative Industries and Performing Arts.

  • Newnham Campus, Launceton

    The Newnham Campus, located in Launceston overlooks the Tamar river and is only a short drive from the city centre. It is conveniently located next to public transporot and shopping districts. The campus offers several affrdable on-campus accomodation options for students.

    The campus additionally houses the Australian Maritime College, as well as the Human Interface Technology Lab (HITLab AU) which is an advanced research facility that helps with research on developing human-computer interface technology that will aid in human intelligence, quality of life, and more.

  • Cradle Coast Campus, Burnie

    The Cradle Coast campus in Burnie houses the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, which is a partnership between UTAS and the Tasmanian Government. It acts as a hub for excellence in research, development, education and training.

    The Cradle Coast Campus is also home to the Rural Clinical School (RCS), which offers acute and primary care clinical training in rural and remote settings.

Campuses in Sydney

  • Darlinghurst Campus

    The Darlinghurst campus is located in the inner suburbs of Sydney, and includes the School of Health Sciences, offering bachelors in Nuring courses, in conjuction with the St Vincent’s and Mater Health Services.

    The campus is located in the same property as the St Vincent’’s hospital, which is Australia’s oldest hospital, and specizlised in heart and lunch transplants, cardiology, cance, HIV treatments, bone marrow transplants, mental health, respitotory, and dryg and alcohol services.

  • Rozelle Campus

    The Rozzele campus is located in the inner western suburbs of Sydney, close to the CBD and public transport. The University is located in the Callan Park Precinct, tgether with the Ambulance Service of NSW and Community education departments.

    The Rozelle campus includes the school of medicine, with the primary aim of providing the community with out of hospital care.

    The final two years of the Bachelor of Nursing course is also offered through the Rozelle Campus in partnership with the Sydney local health district.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

  • Tasmanian International Scholarship (TIS)

    The Tasmanian International Scholarship (TIS) is offered to International students who are pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Tasmania. The total value of the scholarship is 25% of the tuition fee of the total program cost.

    Applicants will be selected based on their academic merit achieved in their secondary, diploma and degree level courses. Successful applicants will be notified via offer letter, once their final results have been submitted.

    Students that are currently enrolled at UTAS will not be able to avail the scholarship. It will only be awarded to commencing international students.

    All applicants will need to have an average of B+ or higher, depending on the type of course that they want to pursue.

  • College of Health and Medicine TIS

    International students pursuing health and medicine courses at UTAS would be eligible for a Health and Medicine TIS. However, since only a limited number of scholarships are available for the health programs, competition is heavy and students would need to demonstrate exceptional results in their secondary, diploma or degree level studies to be considered for this scholarship.

    Students will need to achieve a minimum of an “A” average (80%) or higher to be considered. Successful applicants would be notified through an offer letter and would need to make payment by the specified date, for the award to be obtained.

    The scholarship would only be applicable to commencing students at UTAS; current students would not be eligible for this scholarship.

  • Tuition fee reduction

    International students who meet certain eligibility criteria would be applicable for a 10% reduction in their overall tuition fee as follows:

    Family Alumni Bursary

    International students who have a brother, sister or parents who are currently studying at UTAS or have previously graduated from UTAS will be eligible for a 10% reduction in tuition fee from the overall tuition fee. This fee is available for students completing a foundation studies program, undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree. (excluding Bachelor of Medicine and bachelor or Bachelor of surgery and some postgraduate coursework degrees).

    To be eligible for this bursary, students need to show proof that they have or had a parents or sibling studying at the University of Tasmania. International students who transition to a protection visa, permanent humanitarian visa or become and Australian permanent resident or citizen will not be eligible for this scholarship.

    To apply for this scholarship students must submit a family alumni bursary application to receive discounts and attach supporting documents to prove their eligibility, which include:

    • Sibling's Birth certificate (Original and English translation)
    • Passport (biodata) page for Applicant
    • Passport (biodata) page for Parent
    • Student ID cards or evidence of enrolment
    • Adoption Evidence * Only for adopted students

  • Student advisers

    Student advisers on campus help you to adjust to your new surroundings and culture, including help with time management, study issues, financial issues, housing issues, physical and mental health issues, or even relashionship issues.

  • Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

    The Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) offers free study sessions for specific group study sessions, led by students who have  previously completed the unit.

    Students work in groups to revise content in a relaxed and friendly environment and strengthen your academic skills and assit in building your social networks. The PASS sessions are conducted by PASS leaders, current students who have been trained to handle the session.

  • Workshops

    The student advisors also deliver workshops for academic skill development and English language courses and is open to all students pursuing degree courses at UTAS and are conducted regularly on all the University of Tasmania campuses.

    UTAS also offers distance students access to the workshops through online delivery modes.

Clubs and Societies

The University has several clubs and societies, ranging from drama clubs, sport clubs, debate, performing arts, political clubs, culture clubs to more.

Located on the Newnham campus, Investogator hall is only a 5-minute walk from the main campus building and several offers single room accomodation for students.

The Newnham apartments are 180 fully furnished studio apartments. Each studio apartment has:
